Cultural Boundaries: How to Navigate Through the Tangle

Hard Dog’s Night by Rebecca Hendricks is a heartwarming story about cultural boundaries and how to navigate them with an open mind. While the book is a celebration of our poly-cultural world, it is important to know how to thread through the complicated tangle of multiculturalism.

The sheer level of the interconnectedness of the modern world is the cornerstone of the global community. While there is trouble around the corner looking to upend that situation, it seems like that attempt will just end at that: an attempt. The interconnected global village is not going to stop. It will only grow stronger and stronger as time passes. That is because the amount of cultural and human exchange that has occurred is far too massive for any reactionary movement to prevent. It would be akin to a mantis trying to stop a carriage!

Conflicts Are Often Unavoidable

While the inevitability of a culturally diverse and open world is etched in the globalist fabric, individuals will still often encounter misunderstandings and conflicts. This is natural. This is simply the result of living in a world where there are other people with different customs, values, and perspectives. There will always be interactions that lead to this and that–the point is simply to learn from such encounters.

The aim of every interaction should always be to foster harmonious relationships afterward and to grow personally as a person within the framework of a global community. And to do this one must know how to navigate through the tangle, cultivating a deep understanding of cultural nuances and knowing how to be sensitive and respectful.

How to Navigate through the Tangle

Imagine culture to be a blanket. It is a very colorful one. There are threads woven into it from history, from language, from religion, from politics, and more! This blanket might not even look like a blanket–it could be shaped like a bird. Or a dinosaur! What is meant to be said is that culture heavily influences how we shape our identities and engage with the world. As such, it is important to be aware of this invisible framework not only in its impact on ourselves but also on others.

This is the key to it all: you should do your best to remember that while cultures may have differences amongst themselves, they are still ultimately rooted on common human experiences and desires–some things that we all universally share. You are human, we are all human, and everyone around is human too. There is no denying that.

Only then can you begin to navigate the complexity of multiculturalism.

Cultural Boundaries: The Differences

The first step in untangling and flattening out cultural boundaries is to first acknowledge and appreciate the fact of their existence. Even if you don’t, they will still exist–so why make your heart hurt? Humanity is a veritable rainbow, and we should all do our best to keep it that way, not in the reactionary sense but in a way that takes into account our lived experiences and our shared humanity on this earth. Empathy and understanding are important skills to have in this step. Without them, you are more likely to lash out when you encounter something that you don’t understand. Only with empathy and understanding can you even have the heart to engage with the unknown.

Cultural Boundaries: The Navigation

As you begin to engage with people from all walks of life, there will be situations where your presumptions and assumptions are challenged. But this is okay. Friction makes the world go around, but this does not mean you have to be aggressive. Being passionate is okay, but aggressiveness only leads to hate–and hate is not the aim of interaction. Of course, there will be times when this will happen. And when it does, take some time and put yourself in the shoes of the other person. Hone in not on what separates the two of you but on what makes you the same. Everyone is human in the end, despite the colors we fly or the creed we follow.

The Beauty of Cultural Exchange

The richness and diversity of human cultures ought to be celebrated. Embrace the differences as opportunities for personally growing as an individual and pushing towards a better world.
